WILD CATS SERIES 2025

We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the Wild Cats Series 2025, held from February 22-25 in Triveni, Nawalparasi. This year’s program brought together 18 participants, including 14 university-level students from diverse academic backgrounds and four local citizen scientists. Unlike previous years, we welcomed participants from all geographical regions of Nepal—Terai, Hilly, and Mountain—ensuring inclusivity and equal opportunities for deserving individuals regardless of their location.

Theoretical sessions were led by esteemed resource persons, covering various aspects of wild cat ecology and conservation. Dr. Babu Ram Lamichhane delivered an insightful talk on big cat ecology, research, and conservation in Nepal. Ms. Rama Mishra provided an overview of Nepal’s small carnivores, with a special focus on felids, sharing her latest findings on fishing cats’ home range, diet, and conservation practices. Mr. Rinzin Phunjok Lama discussed snow leopards outside protected areas, highlighting challenges, findings, and conservation prospects in Nepal’s mountainous regions. Additionally, Mr. Manoj Poudel conducted a session on conservation journalism, emphasizing the role of digital media in sharing conservation efforts.

Participants also engaged in practical activities, including outreach sessions, social surveys, and camera trapping. These were conducted through school programs, community visits, and guided jungle walks, providing hands-on experience in conservation research and engagement.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to several key local figures who contributed to the program’s success, including Mr. Jhapendraswar Bhusal, Executive Director of Triveni Gajendra Mokshya Divyadham Kshetra Bikash Samiti, as well as Mr. Dhiraj Thapa Magar and Mr. Mohan Ghimire from the Triveni Buffer Zone User Committee. Our stay was made comfortable by Balaji Hotel and Lodge, Triveni and we sincerely appreciate the warm hospitality and support provided by KhemRaj Neupane. We are equally grateful to Mr. Bishal Koirala and Mr. Prem Mahato for their continuous collaboration in making this program a success.

The Wild Cats Series 2025 was a remarkable experience, fostering learning, collaboration, and community involvement in wild cat conservation. This meaningful cause was generously supported by various donors and partners — Big Cat Rescue, Leo Foundation, The Rufford Foundation, Fishing Cat Conservation Alliance & Terai Fishing Cat Project, Nepal. We look forward to continuing this initiative in the years to come.
