Status survey and conservation of Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) in Parasi district, Nepal

The project aimed to strengthen the foundation for Fishing Cat conservation in Parasi District, focusing on potential habitats in Pratappur and Susta Rural Municipalities while documenting locally reported threats and conservation concerns. It combined camera-trap surveys, community interviews, conservation communication and educational outreach to generate new information and strengthen local participation in Fishing Cat conservation.

Objectives

• Generate baseline information on the status and potential occurrence of Fishing Cats in Parasi District.
• Identify key threats affecting Fishing Cats and their habitats.
• Assess local knowledge, perceptions and interactions concerning Fishing Cats.
• Implement targeted conservation-awareness and community-engagement activities.
• Strengthen local capacity for continued Fishing Cat research and conservation.
